The field app
The technician works from their phone, with one hand, sometimes with gloves, and often without a network. The field app is made for that: everything they do is kept on the device and leaves as soon as the connection comes back.
Installing it
The app does not go through the app stores: it installs from the browser.
- In the office, the dashboard and Directory › Field devices show a QR code, "Install the field app".
- The technician scans it with their phone, opens the page, then adds it to the home screen.
- They sign in once with their email address and password — with a network: they need to receive their day before they can work without one.
It then updates by itself. If the office requires a newer version, the "Update required" screen says so, and nothing waiting to be sent is lost.
A technician's day
- My jobs lists the work orders assigned to them, today and upcoming; those finished during the day are set apart, under "Done today". A job's details give the customer, the site, the access instructions, the route ("Navigate") and the assets.
- Start route, then I have arrived: the office sees the progress live.
- The checklist is filled in asset by asset: yes / no, a reading with its unit, a choice, an observation, a photo. A value out of limits is flagged at once.
- Fit a part: the screen offers what their van carries, and the part comes out of it.
- Report a defect: what they see, how serious it is, details and a photo — even offline. The app reminds them of what is already reported on the asset, to avoid duplicates.
- Customer signature: the customer signs in the box, and their name is recorded. They sign before the job is completed: they acknowledge the work they see.
- Complete job: the report is prepared at the office.
Without a network
- Actions, answers, photos and the signature are kept on the phone and leave by themselves when the signal returns, in the order they were made.
- The Sync screen says what is waiting ("3 pending") or that everything is sent.
- An action the office refuses (a job cancelled in the meantime, for instance) is shown, with the reason; it does not block the next ones.
A phone shared by two technicians keeps each one's work: on signing out, what is waiting is kept and will leave at its author's next sign-in — never under someone else's name.
